I'm a Finalist in UK Songwriting contest 2010!!!

I have today received news that my song “Just Dance” was a finalist in this year's UK Songwriting contest. The song was written after a night out at a massive student event held at London's Fabric nightclub, which she attended with one of her friends (Angel). The same song was used in 2008 as part of Puma's European online promotion of their new fragrance. A second song “Last Goodbye” received a Commended Entry.

There were over 5,000 entries this year, and beating thousands of others, Sahara's song “Just Dance” received a score of “8” - songs with a score of 8 or 9 are finalists and are all considered for the winning and runner up positions. Only a tiny percentage of entries reach this level, so I am ecstatic at my best ever result in this contest.

The UK Songwriting Contest is one of the oldest and most well established song contests in the world and since its launch back in 2002. The following have all been involved in this important annual songwriting event: The BRIT Trust (of BRIT Awards fame), The Guild of International Songwriters and Composers, top producers, writers and broadcasters, Music Aid International, the BBC, Roland Music, The World Music Foundation, American Songwriter Magazine, BASCA (The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors), the SCO (Song Copyright Organization), The BRIT School, the BRIT Studios and many others, and many well known names in the music business closely follow the contest each year looking for new talent to work with. In the words of Channel 4 Television - "The UK Songwriting Contest does what it says on the tin! This is a real chance for new songwriters to break into the music business." (Channel Four Television - Ideas Factory).

Well, the truth is I've been busy with other projects. But lately I seem to be making a return to the music - in the next few weeks hopefully I will have some announcements to make, and will have some new recordings for you to listen to.

This year I'd like to take things a step up. So I've been working quietly to try to make this happen.

Just a quick note to wish you a happy New Year! I'm sure by now you're sick of everyone saying it, emailing it, texting it, MMS'ing it, blogging it, tryna blag a kiss because of it ... hahahaha! yes, thats where I am with it. Inspite of all that though, 2010 promises to be a great year!

For NYE this year I sang at Jasmines in Tooting, which was a treat for me - to say the least. I toasted the New Year in with a bottle of water... something I havent done in a long while... and I have to say it was nice to wake up with a clear, headache-free, head.

I also got to spend some time with family that I havent seen in as many as 10 years, and met so many people at Jasmines that I have not seen in even longer than that... what an end to a very eventful 2009....

I wish all of you the best for the New Year --- and BEYOND....

This year I scored a 7, which is borderline finalist, so I am very pleased... if things keep going this way I'll win next year! LOL

All the excitement about Zimfest being this weekend might be overshadowing the fact that Zimfest is actually hosted by WeZimbabwe, a UK registered charity that raise funds to help Zimbabweans. ...

I'm raising money for WEZIMBABWE and I'd really appreciate your support. This year some funds raised at this huge event that Zimfest has become will go towards Tichakunda preschool - a school which emerged after the Hatcliffe Extension squatter camp was razed to the ground in "Operation Murambatsvina". The 600 young children that attend at Tichakunda range between the ages of 2 - 9 years old, and are taught lessons and given one daily meal of porridge. They are trying to raise money to sink a borehole so the children can have access to clearn water, build classrooms so they can have lessons in a structure other than in a wooden shack, build toilets, and to give the children more than one meal a day - for some of these children that's the only meal they are getting... find out more about their projects.

I've confirmed my set, and things are ready to rock! Just tweaking a few inevitable last minute issues..... hmmm...

... anyway...

This past week I did a radio interview with Lance Guma on SW Radio Africa, along with Slyvester who does the PR for Zimfest , Kuda of the brilliant band DKR. Miss Africa Perth 2009

The Miss Africa Perth pageant 2009 was held on 23rd May, at the Astor Theatre, Mount Lawley, Perth... it had claimed to be the cultural event of the year -- and it lived up to that completely!!

A beautiful, sassy young lady who was born in Sudan was the victor on the day, and competition was tight as many African beauties vied for the title and opportunity to make a difference for Africans in Perth and back home.

I performed "The Circle of Life", an Elton John cover, which I thought was fitting to the event. The evening was a resounding success, and I was surrounded by very talented singers, dancers and a whole host of professionals, who all worked very hard to make the event the success that it turned out to be.

The 3rd annual Miss Africa Perth beauty pageant will be held on 23rd May 2009 at the Astor Theatre in Mount Lawley. The winner gains entry into the national Miss Africa Australia contest, and works for a year to raise charity funds to enhance the African community here and abroad. I just found out that I was a nominee for the ISSA songwriting contest last year!! My song "No Tomorrow" was a Session One nominee in the competition, and although I did not win, I am very pleased to be nominated -- in fact, I'm positively beaming!!

For someone who's never had songwriting lessons, I have placed in every single contest that I have entered... I am proud of these achievements, and I hope to refine my songwriting skill in coming years - and take at least one of those coveted prizes....

Yesterday's photoshoot

Hey there..
Had a photoshoot with the beautiful Lina yesterday... I think it went swimmingly! She did manage to get a few smiles outta me - particularly when she mentioned a certain runner (randome guy) who we thought kept popping up after he got some eye candy during the early part of the shoot... when you see the length of my little dress you'll understand...

Anyway, we did a couple of locations, and managed to get all done by sunset at about 8:30 pm. I dont know if I'll ever get used to having people stare at me during a photoshoot... LOL

Anyway, Lina is working on getting the photos out, and I am very sure I will have something to show y'all soon...

Next stop - the studio! I got a few tracks that need laying down...

Uk Unsigned 2008 Results

I was priviledged to perform at 2008's UK Unsigned competition at the beautiful Hackney Empire Theatre on Sunday. It was an opportunity for urban music and talent to be celebrated, which is something we need more of in the UK. The show featured a variety of acts, including speciality acts (young Leon on the Harmonica), and dance groups, as well as singers of all ages and genres.

For my own result I didnt now manage to take the coveted first prize :(

I did learn a few things from the experience though, and these lessons will I take with me forward to the next challenges that I will find in my pursuit of music as a career.

Thank you for all your support, particularly Jubeda, Tarryn, Marshall, Trevor, Delroy and Avril. And to two little rascals who did very well to watch the show for a full 5 hours, without causing too much trouble... :)

Whats next?
Well for now I need to concentrate on my studies, I have exams in a few weeks time and intend to get very good grades. I have completed another song though, and will be visiting the studio to lay the track down very soon (during a study break... LOL)... Hold tight for that, watch this space...

Hi there! Well the day is almost upon us - the finals for the UK Unsigned contest 2008. The show is at Hackney Empire on Sunday, from 1pm and tickets cost £12.50 in advance. Get your tickets right now if you're planning on coming along.

Hopefully the result will be happier than with Live & Unsigned! and I know my local press is supporting me - I noticed they had a small article about me in this week's press! - its always going to be a lovely surprise to see your name in the newspaper! LOL

So - until Sunday I'll be rehearsing a little (not too much, you know) and I'm ready to do my best at the contest. After that I'm going to record a new track in the studio and focus a bit more on my studies - exams are due from the end of April to mid May....

Live & Unsigned - Ready to go this Sunday

Hi there!
Well, the day has almost come. Just five short weeks ago, I found out I had won a chance to compete in the Semi Final stage of Live & Unsigned. Today, only two nights to go, and I am ready - as I'll ever be!

I'll be performing my original song, "No Tomorrow" which you will have heard on this side, amongst others. The t-shirts are printed, the flyers are ready to go, rehearsals have been done, we're ready.

Of course, I've done none of this on my own - for getting me to this stage: thanks to my cousin Tarryn for organising so many things and trying to keep me sane (!), Alexio Ferrao Design (www.afd.net) for designing my flyer, Enfield Independent (www.enfieldindependent.co.uk) for newspaper coverage, Joe Public Studios (www.myspace.com/joepublicstudios) for the arrangement on my track, Aldridge Fisher for my new dedicated website, Al Fraser for fabulous beats and some really helpful advice, and Tammy & Krystyna for back up vocals. Also, thanks to Danny for being my rock, Tara and Clara for being my advisors, and my friends and family for all their support.

So for the next day or so I'm on chill mode, right at the minute I'm chilling in front of the tele, with a cuppa, watching Sport Relief on BBC 1 - a charity that I am a full supporter of - its such a good cause!

Anyway, as for Live & Unsigned, I hope to see some of you there! Tickets are still available, and can be reserved for pick up at the door at this stage, cost is £6 each and showtime is 5:15pm.

Other than that, thats it from me for now ... until Monday then, when I will write again to give you the results...

Hello every body...
Yep - I'm ecstatic! Went to perform in the Semi Finals of UK Unsigned last night, and managed to make it through to the Finals which will be held at Hackney Empire on 30th March... Met a couple of cool people as well also singers - Colin, and my friend Cherelle... I've got a few pictures - will put mine up and wait to hear from Colin and Cherelle where they want me to email theirs too..

It was a fabulous, and very entertaining evening. There were so many talented singers in each category, heard some really inspirational original songs too. Best of all was Leon who is a young black man who plays the harmonica...! yeah you read right - and what a talent... his performance gave me goosebumps... I'm sure he will be famous! (better make friends with him now eh.. LOL)

Anyways, watch this space for updates on the finals of UK UNSIGNED to be held on 30th March at Hackney Empire...

Hi there!
Just a quick note...

The UK Unsigned semi finals is this weekend (Live & Unsigned next week). I'm all ready to go - just a few things left to organise - like what to wear.. LOL

Hopefully I'll have some good news to report after my return from the competition on Sunday evening..

- went to the Live & Unsigned auditions at Croydon on 2nd February, and won a place in the Live Semi Final show on 16th March 2007.

If you're a fan and would like to come along & watch, please get your tickets from me... £6 per head, starts at 5:15 pm, lasts about 1.5 hours, no age restrictions (thus no babysitting issues ..:)
